The age-old question… Should I work with an unlicensed, uninsured contractor to possibly save some money on my home projects? Here’s what: Avoid it at all costs, and we literally mean COST. Be cause the risk of what it could cost just isn’t worth it, and here’s why (read on).

  1. Cheapest is not always safest. Contractors put a lot of time and energy into learning, testing and earning their licenses and permits. They generally have greater knowledge about how to keep the worksite, your home, as safe as possible.
  2. Licensed contractors can make sure that your home reno projects meet all city and federal requirements, safety protocols and expectations. If those things aren’t done to city standards, that could be a huge headache when it comes time to sell your property. There are buyers who will ask to see permits for work done on the home, and it can be important to them. Let your contractor make sure that everything they work on is up to par with regulations. This can have a huge impact on your bottom dollar in the long run.
  3. Many licensed contractors will offer liability insurance to protect YOU. That extra protection and peace of mind for yourself, your loved ones, and anyone else who might visit the project is important and worth considering.

It’s totally understandable to want to use an unlicensed contractor on your home remodel, but hopefully these points offer some insight as to why it’s worth going the licensed and insured route.
